Gaon (882-942), who belonged to the second generation of Judeo-Arabic theologians, is unusual in that he excels in both polemic and disputatious thinking and contemplative thinking, says Hegedus (philosophy and religious studies, U. of Western Ontario). She goes on to explain that he created the earliest known Jewish systematic philosophy and polemic literature of the Middle Ages, and influenced the religious thought of generations of thinkers. She focuses on two of his books, The Book of Beliefs and Convictions, the first handbook of Judaism based on a rational foundation; and Commentary on the Sefer Yezirah, which analyzes the earliest and most debated work of Jewish mysticism. The study evolved from her 2000 PhD dissertation in Islamic studies at the Catholic University of Leuve, Belgium. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
