This is a slightly revised edition of Joan Stambaugh's 1996 English translation of Martin Heidegger's Sein und Zeit, widely considered the German philosopher's most important work, one with lasting influence in the realms of ontology, existentialism, hermeneutics, and deconstruction. For this new edition, certain German words have been inserted in brackets next to their English translations wherever the connections between ideas might be lost through translation, Greek characters are now used for Greek words, and marginal comments from Heidegger's own readings of the text are included at the bottom of the page along with the footnotes.
