The classically paradigmatic account of the French Revolution holds that it was a social and economic phenomenon in which the capitalist bourgeois middle class led a revolt against the royal, noble, and ecclesiastical authorities. In the Anglo-Saxon world, this interpretation has largely been supplanted by the argument that the Revolution was primarily a cultural and ideological conflict led by alienated intellectuals and nihilistic extremists. Heller (early modern and modern history, U. of Manitoba, Canada) here reasserts the classical view, providing a narrative of the development of the Revolution that is based on current knowledge and acknowledges and seeks to counter the arguments of the revisionist school.
