In his introduction editor Heller (real estate law, Columbia Law School, New York) explains the themes that underpin this collection of 35 previously published articles, which are reprinted in facsimile and presented in two volumes. He discusses concepts using the example of a hypothetical parking lot--one that becomes overcrowded because it's free-- to suggest that private property and market transactions might solve problems related to overuse of public space only to create problems related to underuse (it's in private hands & nobody gets to use it); "ordinary use" is optimal. The papers (selected from such publications as J. of Political Economy, Harvard Law Review, and J. of Competition Law and Economics, among many others) are arranged in sections on precursors; theory and solutions of the commons; and of the anticommons; linking commons and anticommons; the economy of property forms; and applications of anticommons theory to patents, other types of intangible property, and real property. The material is not indexed. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
