While there are many books on literacy instruction, most reading research has been conducted in four English-speaking countries--the U.S., England, New Zealand, and Australia--by monolingual English researchers on monolingual English-speaking students and then applied to second language learners. Herrera, Perez (both Kansas State U.), and Escamilla's (U. of Colorado, Bolder) text emphasizes approaches and strategies specific to the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students and addresses some of the gaps in literacy instruction research surrounding second language learners, so that English as a second language teachers and grade-level/mainstream teachers can bridge theory to practice in developing a culturally responsive pedagogy.
