Students of World War II have been hampered by a lack of primary information from the Soviet Union. Hill (military history, University of Calgary, Canada) has redressed that lack in this reader on the Soviet response to the German invasion. The translated documents from Soviet archives are presented in boxes with an accompanying commentary. Hill begins with government papers from just after the Revolution up until 1939, setting the stage for the conflict to come. Chapters follow the course of the war, emphasizing military operations, including the siege of Leningrad. Although Hill insists that this is a purely military history, his comments on the effects of war on the population remind the reader of the human cost. While this reader is primarily intended as a university text, it will be of interest to general readers and, Hill notes, to reenactors and computer gamers who strive for accuracy. A comprehensive timeline and glossary are included as well as suggestions for further reading. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
