The author details a three-stage model of helping skills that involves helping clients in exploring feelings and thoughts, gaining new insights about problems, and moving towards positive behavior change. Based on client-centered theory, psychoanalytic and interpersonal theories, and behavioral theories, the model focuses on exploration (attending, listening, observing, exploring thoughts and narratives, and exploring feelings); insight (challenging clients and fostering awareness, facilitating insight, and immediacy); and action tasks. It also covers ethical issues and integrating the skills in sessions with clients, as well as common issues. The text does not address counseling children, families, or clients with significant emotional or psychological difficulties, or the diagnosis of psychological problems or characteristics of psychopathology. This edition has new chapters on self-awareness and cultural awareness, more methods for challenging clients, a clarified action stage, a glossary of clinical terms, and a research summary at the end of each chapter.
