This how-to textbook guides graduate-level readers in the design, implementation, analysis and written reporting of Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR). This approach relies on inductive methods for gathering data and then drawing conclusions about it, with a focus on words over numbers, small sample sizes, open-ended questions in interviews, multiple viewpoints and multicausal explanations, and collaboration among researchers. Almost all of the 18 chapters have at least three authors, including in every case the editor, Clara Hill (psychology, U. of Maryland, College Park). The other contributors are professors or doctoral students of psychology, clinicians and therapists. The four major sections of the text give a general historical and philosophical overview of CQR; the step-by-step process of conducting CQR, from building research teams to collecting data to writing up reports; ethical and cultural considerations for CQR, as well as establishing trustworthiness in CQR studies; and modifying or extending CQR studies. A whole chapter is taken up by an annotated bibliography of CQR studies for further research and corroboration. A thematic FAQ about CQR is provided in the back as an appendix.
