Hill offers a translation and commentary on the first two volumes (De Rhythmopoeïa, oder von der Tactordnung and Grundregeln zur Tonordnung insgemein) of violinist, composer, and theorist Joseph Riepel's Anfangsgründe zur Musikalischen Setzkunst (1752-1768), in which he presents a theory of metric and tonal order in composition. The commentary discusses the musical examples in each volume; Riepel's theory in the context of the works of Berlin composers who studied in Dresden; the possible influence of his teaching on Mozart; the evidence that Heinrich Christoph Koch wrote his Versuch einer Anleitung zur Composition as an elaboration and expansion of Riepel's work; and reviews and commentaries, as well as a list of Riepel's students.
