Opening his analysis with Robert Frost's poem Out, Out! about a boy who dies in an industrial accident, Hindman (labor and human resources, Appalachian State U.) theorizes that industrialization is both the source of this socioeconomic problem and its means of eradication. The author traces the history of child labor and reform in the US, drawing upon primary sources to portray this issue in six key industries, and examines the legacy of US child labor history for a global economy. Despite remaining trouble spots and definitional and data issues, he optimistically concludes that child labor may end within the lifetimes of children who are now working. Photos show children engaged in often dangerous work. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
