Offering proposals for creatively reinterpreting the Pure Land path, a form of Japanese Buddhism that emphasizes a way to enlightenment pursued while carrying on life in society, this volume begins with proposals by three Buddhists for treating fundamental questions regarding Pure Land teaching. Next, two western philosophers of religion review the first three chapters, followed by reconsideration of their original proposals by the Buddhists. Historical perspective is offered on the handling of central doctrinal issues within the Pure Land, and particularly Shin Buddhist tradition in Japan, with an afterword reviewing the relationships among the three Buddhist proposals given.
