This book provides an annotated guide to American stage productions remade for film and television, covering works ranging from late nineteenth century American plays and musicals, through silent and sound films, to made-for-video productions by PBS, A&E, HBO, and others. Each entry includes credits for the play or musical: date, theater, playwright, cast (with characters) and crew, length of run, choreographer, song titles, and authors of the score when available. The screen versions follow, listing alternative titles, date, studio, screenwriter, cast, director, and producer. Commentary is given on what changes occurred between the formats, the strengths and weakness of each, the success of the transition, and how the production was received. Hischak (theater arts, State U. of New York College at Cortland) is the author of twelve books on theater, film, and Tin Pan Alley, and has published several plays.
