This text introduces the fundamentals of speech science (inclusive of voice science) that are important to aspiring and practicing clinicians. The book is accessible to beginning students, and also contains material for graduate students and practicing speech-language pathologists. Chapters are infused with clinical scenarios, sidetracks of clinical and historical interest, considerations of the scientific bases of clinical protocols and methods, and discussions of the roles of clinical personnel involved in the evaluation and management of disorders of speech production, speech, and swallowing. The art program offers color and b&w anatomical illustrations. Occasional cartoons lighten the material and also carry educational messages. The text is suitable for courses that cover the anatomy and physiology of speech production and swallowing, and the acoustics and perception of speech. Hixon is director of the National Center for Neurogenic Communication Disorders at the University of Arizona. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
