The Monument is in north-central New Mexico, about an hour drive from Santa Fe. Hoard presents a guide to the hiking trails through the dry mountainous terrain. Maps show the course of the trail, and text, drawings, and photographs describe features, and sometimes dangers, along the way. The introduction briefly traces the history of the area from prehistoric times through the arrival of Europeans to World War II and its aftermath. Many of the features she describes record the various catastrophes--fire, flood, drought, tree die-off--that the park has suffered over the past decades. The first edition was published in 1977.
