Conceived as a sequel to the earlier How Economics Forgot History, on the development and disappearance of the problem of historical specificity in German economics, this work offers a similar historical narrative on the problem of agency and structure in economic theory. Hodgson (business studies, U. of Hertfordshire, UK) suggests that the metatheoretical framework of Darwinism, as opposed to the discredited notions of "social Darwinism," provided a way of explaining the selection of social structures in the development of American Institutionalism. He examines the thinking of such figures as Thorstein Veblen, John R. commons, and Clarence Ayres, along the way advocating for those positions he thinks would aid economic thinking today.
