Input-output tables are usually used in economics to record the flow of goods and services in an economy, but in this work, Hoekstra (of Statistics Netherlands) uses them to record physical flows of material--such as extractions of natural resources and emissions to the environment--along with monetary and hybrid material-economic flows. The data tables, containing information on the use of iron and steel and plastic products in the Netherlands for the period 1990-1997, are then subjected to structural decomposition analysis in order to attempt to determine the influence of structural changes including economic growth, consumption shifts, export growth, and technological change on environmentally relevant physical flows.
