Hoffman (economics, U. of Delaware) and Maynard (education and social policy, U. of Pennsylvania) compile 10 chapters that address the economic and social consequences of teen pregnancy in the US. They focus on adolescent girls who give birth at age 18 or younger and assess the effects of delaying their childbearing for an average of four years. Chapters consider overall trends in teen fertility and sexuality, and specific dimensions of the consequences of adolescent childbearing for mothers, fathers, children, in terms of health and health care, abuse, neglect, and foster care placement, incarceration among adult children, for the life chances of these children, and the economic costs. This edition contains a new chapter on teen pregnancy interventions, and most other chapters have been revised and updated, including updates to trends in teen sexual activity, pregnancy, and childbearing through 2004; re-estimations of the consequences for mothers and children using data from the early 2000s; and updates to the estimated costs. Contributors are researchers and scholars in economics, children, urban policy, and social welfare in the US. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
