About the same time European scientists were first seriously pondering the nature and mechanics of procreation, says Holland (U. of California-Santa Barbara), writes of German Romanticism began to conduct their own investigation. He explores how literary genres integrate processes of generation into narrative form, taking as examples Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), Novalis (1772-1801), and Johann Wilhelm Ritter (1776-1810). He focuses on how the accuracy of theoretical language relates to the mutability of a living organism, the temporality of generation, and the narration of life. The three cases are not at all homogeneous, he says, and demonstrate the diverse approaches that were possible within a single historical period, literary school, genre, and language. German quotations are followed by English translation. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
