Holland, who directs a local affiliate of the National Writing Project and has worked in writing and language arts, provides teachers of grades four through adult with quick writes and mentor texts that help students get engaged in meaningful and reflective writing, or deeper writing, which digs beneath the surface to engage them in a search of memory, critical analysis of relationships and situations, and discovery of themselves and the world. The quick writes are meant to add to existing instruction and include an introduction to the topic or concept and the quick write lesson, which includes mentor texts to provide models of possible content and genres for writing, brief instruction or prewriting, and the writing suggestions.
