This monograph explores income diversification among artisanal fishers, the strain on marine resources, and the relationship between them on Kenya's Indian Ocean coast. After several years of research, the authors found that income diversification among the fishers did not lessen the pressure on marine resources and that many people with alternative employment were taking up fishing. They also found that fishers who operated near shore typically used damaging gear more often than sea-going fishers. They concluded that policies to generate employment opportunities in coastal communities are not likely to reduce pressure on marine resources and need to be oriented toward industry location, labor requirements, and coastal pollution. This well-research study includes a listing of abbreviations and acronyms, a glossary, and extensive references. Authors are Hoorweg (African Studies Centre, Leiden), Wangila (Masinde Muliro U. of Science and Technology, Kakamega), and Degen (Desert Animal Adaptations, Ben-Gurion U, Beer Sheva).
