The history of Greek begins with Mycenaean documents dating from the second half of the second millennium BC, recounts Horrocks (comparative philology, U. of Cambridge, England), and scholars have built careers studying every stage of the language and its use from then until the present day, so there is no dearth of material for a history. He has had to assume some minimal familiarity with Greek in order to say anything at all, but his account spans the disciplines of classicists, Byzantinists, neo-Hellenists, and historical linguists, and to be accessible to all, he has had to skirt the favorite jargon of any. Quotations, however, are followed by English translation. His periods are from Mycenae to the Roman Empire, Byzantium from Constantine I to Mehmet the Conqueror, and from the Ottoman Empire to the European Union. The 1997 first edition was published by Longman in a series that was terminated when the company was bought by Pearson; this second takes account of reviews of the first and of the 2006 Greek translation.
