Apparently not all of us learn about class and race on the streets. Some of us learn about it in ivy-covered buildings named after our grandparents. Howard (education, Hanover College and Lesley U.) draws upon his experience teaching at an elite private school along with his extensive research as he explains how teachers can integrate their commitment to social justice with their daily practice. As Howard builds his six-year ethnography he examines the nature and concept of privilege itself and the ways affluent students are taught to expect it and maintain it. He examines what really matters to the teachers, parents and students of elite schools, and how it affects the quality of educational programs and the collective identity. He finds that affluent student have their own ways of constructing privilege quite apart from, but also in response to, parental and societal pressures.
