Reducing the inherent impairments of analog radio-frequency components in wireless communications systems by optimizing the circuit characteristics is very costly and offers only a limited improvement, so researchers are turning to mitigating the impairment by processing the signal after it has been converted to digital. Huang, Zhu, and Leung explain the approach and its application to some frequently encountered distortion problems. They cover in-phase and quadrature impairment and compensation techniques, nonlinear power amplifier linearization, radio-frequency in-band distortion compensation, array calibration for digital beamforming applications, cross-polarization interference cancellation in dual-polarization communication systems, and carrier frequency offset and phase noise mitigation.
