Hughes (education, U. of Toledo) presents an ethnographic study of multiple generations of three black families of the Albemarle area in northeastern North Carolina; the author was himself a former K-12 student in the region. The account reveals how pre- and post- Brown school histories from the area involve understanding and enduring education struggles; constructing and reproducing education hopes through relational ties; and handling struggle, education hopes, and relationships in a manner that is connected to the black families' educational outcomes. The study offers insights into the conditions of school desegregation and its influences on the struggles and hopes of rural, black, Southern families. There is no subject index.
