This book investigates various drivers of innovation within small business and suggests that increases in employee headcount and research and development expenditures can trigger innovation; however, the contributors find that the number of patents owned by a small business is not a good indicator of a firm's value. The book is composed of two chapters, containing public documents which have been combined and reformatted. The first chapter examines various drivers of innovation within small businesses, as well as the role that innovation plays in creating value in small businesses. The second chapter explores the role of tinkerers, who are defined as people who want to improve a technology for their own reasons, by their own criteria, and who would rather share the technology than work alone. Some examples given are the inventors of the airplane and the personal computer. The chapter shows that the reality of networks of these tinkerers should be incorporated into an abstract, deductive model of open-source technology innovation.
