During the decades that the International Monetary Fund has been charged with overseeing the stability of the global financial system, its economists have conducted research into links between the world of finance and the real world. Here they present 17 of those studies as a contribution to critical debates on the nature of appropriate policy responses at both the national and multi-lateral levels to the recent global financial crisis, which happened on its watch. The general themes are financial boom-bust cycles; financial integration, financial liberalization, and economic performance; and policy issues. Among the topics are evidence from emerging Europe on whether weak banks are leading credit booms, whether financial liberalization improves the allocation of capital, and trends and real effects in corporate governance quality.
