A former university lecturer, Ismond is now a freelance writer employed by the Health Care Trusts in the West of England to research race and sex discrimination issues. His study is based on interviews of 15 athletes of African- Caribbean and Asian origin conducted over a three-year period 11 men and four women, from 21 to 53 years of age, including former and current elite-level competitors and serious amateur-level athletes. The study contributes to the debates acknowledging a complex relationship between race and sport, and challenges current beliefs that the British sports world is one of equal opportunity, regardless of race or gender.
