Pregnancy is an experience both universal and unique. Ivry (anthropology, University of Haifa, Israel) discovered that it is also viewed by both pregnant women and medical professionals differently in the cultures of Israel and Japan. Her study began with her own experience of pregnancy in each country. Years later, she began a systematic evaluation of the attitudes toward the woman, the child, medical practices and, lastly, the father. Since these are both industrialized countries with equal medical facilities and education, the comparisons focus on social differences. Through interviews, popular press articles and medical records, Ivry found that in Japan women are expected to take their own blood pressure and weight, even in the doctor's office, whereas Israeli women expect tests to be done on them. The fetus is treated in Japan as a child already communicating with the mother. In Israel, the concern, even in low-risk pregnancies, is to be alert for abnormalities and the fetus is looked at more clinically. Israeli women generally work through their pregnancies; Japanese women go into seclusion. Men are generally excluded in Japan from birthing classes and even births; in Israel they are encouraged to attend both. As an anthropologist, Ivry makes no value judgments on her findings. She does suggest that more work needs to be done on the culture of "normal" pregnancy rather than "reproduction" with an emphasis on biomedical extreme measures.
