The notorious London psychiatric hospital was a popular a form of entertainment during the Elizabethan period just like the dramatic stage, contends Jackson (English, Wayne State U.), and sometime around 1600, directors of the asylum realized they could increase revenues by charging people to view the inmates. He explores the portrayal of the practice in plays by Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, John Webster, and other playwrights of the period.
