Architects Jackson (U. of Liverpool), Jo Lintonbon (U. of Sheffield), and Bryony Staples, in private practice, began this project when they were together in the civil engineering department at the University of Leeds. It analyzes the buildings that industrialist Titus Salt had built in 1848 to house workers at his mill, one of a number of factory villages built in Britain since the 1770s. They trace factory villages from Derwent Valley to Saltaire, then look at making the town, social hierarchy, building Saltaire 1853-58 and 1860-75, and its transition from model town to world heritage site in 2001. The accompanying disk provides a house-type analysis for every property in the town. Distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Co.
