The late Rodolfo Jacobson had taught at Cortland's State University of New York College and at the U. of Texas, San Antonio, and was a visiting professor at Universiti Putra Malaysia, Serdang, Malaysia. His text contains ten chapters by 14 individuals affiliated with the Universiti Putra Malaysia which provide Western readers insights into the research interests and views on language issues of one group of Malaysian university-based researchers. Five papers explore ethno-and socio-linguistic topics, including the Minangkabau Pasambahan, media response to terrorism, negotiation discourse, bilingualism, and the status of foreign languages. The remaining five chapters, focusing on the teaching of English in Malaysia, deal with the teaching of grammar, reading, and writing, and sociolinguistic aspects of teaching literature.
