Jakowlew, of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, is the editor of this two-volume collection of articles (the volumes are sold individually), with basic and clinical biology in Vol.1 and articles on cancer treatment and therapy in Vol.2. This volume is divided into three parts, with the first part consisting of 17 chapters on transforming growth factor [Beta], or TGF[Beta], in developing and advanced cancers, with chapter topics that include the role of TGF[Beta] in osteolytic bone metastases, TGF[Beta] and progression of esophageal cancer, and key roles of TGF[Beta] and Smad3 in prostate cancer. Part Two contains 16 chapters on TGF[Beta] in cancer treatment and therapy and Part Three presents 11 chapters on developing inhibitors of TGF[Beta] signaling for therapy. The authors, who are with medical research institutions worldwide, discuss their own research and provide both introductory abstracts and full lists of references in each chapter. Both volumes constitute a significant addition to the field. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
