In this study, Jander contends that the three movements of Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto are based on Classical versions of the Orpheus legend by Virgil and Ovid, and describes Beethoven's encounters and the enthusiasm in Vienna for the legend, and demonstrates how each of the movements is tied to part of it.
