It has always been perfectly situated, first for sailing vessels. Port Townsend welcomed thousands of them as they made their way through Puget Sound, and investors flocked in to build commercial buildings and houses from 1850 through the 1890s. The ships paid off, and the buildings and houses got Victorian and impressive, as did the parks, churches, schools and clubs, creating gentrified, if slightly smug atmosphere. It should also have been perfectly situated for the railroads, but when the rails never came the port was abandoned, as was much of the town. In its third life it appears to be perfectly situated once again as a haven for artists, retirees and hearty commuters. The county historical society for Port Townsend has done an admirable job of acquiring and preserving evidence of the three lives of the town, with these fine representations of town life, progress, failure and renewal.
