Jenkins, who has been a teacher, principal, and superintendent and consults and writes on education, identifies 10 wasteful practices in US education that have existed for a long time. He details deep-seated management problems that have been integrated into the unconscious operations of daily school life and how to solve them. He argues that current solutions to education problems don't dig deep enough to remove the root causes of problems, and outlines what the real problems are. They relate to wasting time--permission to forget information, the pendulum that moves from one educational focus to another, change with no improvement, no clear aim, and too much refereeing and not enough coaching--and wasting student potential through poor statistical practice, adding pressure vs. removing barriers, loss of enthusiasm for school and learning, trusting experience and not testing hypotheses, and focusing on teaching instead of learning.
