As they seek to be more productive with their existing plants, more and more European firms are finding that organization shift work creates more productivity at minimum cost. However, as employees take on shift work, they may well find that even with an attractive pay differential their nonstandard working hours create tensions in their home and social lives. Acting on the questions of what happens when people take on shift work and what such workers can do to feel more involved and in control of their lives, the generators of this report interviewed and administered questionnaires to workers and firms from Denmark, Italy, the former East Germany, The Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. The disruption of families is more than one might assume, and the participation of workers in organizing shift work has both benefits and limits.
