Jerger (behavioral and brain sciences, U. of Texas at Dallas) is introduced as the person responsible for the acceptance of much in modern audiology practice. He describes earlier pioneers in the field (from hearing aid developer Harvey Fletcher to Cordia C. Bunch, the first US audiologist), and trends: e.g., the development of the pure-tone audiogram, early detection of hearing disorders, auditory processing disorder in children and adults those with apparently normal hearing, and tinnitus evaluation and therapy. Many advances are attributed to the Veterans Administration and the military aural rehabilitation programs begun in World War II. The volume include photos, information on professional education and organizations, and suggested readings. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
