John (psychology, University of California-Berkeley) provides a handbook for researchers and students of personality. The first two sections of the book introduce the history of modern personality theory and research, and summarize seven of the most important theoretical approaches, including evolutionary, psychodynamic, and trait theories. The rest of the book is organized around five broad content areas of personality theory and research: biological bases, development, self and social processes, cognitive and motivational process, and emotion, adjustment, and health. This second edition reflects advances in the field made in the ten years since the first edition was published. For this edition, 17 of the 32 chapters are entirely new, covering topics including aging, identity, implicit motives, spirituality and religion, and animal personality. The editor is acting director of the Institute of Personality and Social Research. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
