This 2-volume reference is derived from the online edition of Ullman's Encyclopedia of industrial chemistry and presents in printed format 18 chapters, each containing the state of research on its subject. Among the topics are nucleic acids, techniques for DNA analysis, PCR reactions, enzymes, and biomass chemicals. The lengthiest chapter is devoted to biotechnology, which is co-authored by 18 specialists, most of them based in Germany (some are in Japan, Australia, and Switzerland). The salient aspects of the topic are fully described; biotechnology and food, health, process design, and tissue engineering, for example, are among the sub-sections treated at length in the chapter on biotechnology. Each chapter concludes with a lengthy list of references, and all are illustrated with tables, drawings, photos, and chemistry. Both author and subject indexes are found in v.2.
