Johnson and Larsen present this transcription of the letters and journals of frontiersman Edward Jay Allen, a traveler to the Pacific Northwest in 1852-55 and delegate to the Monticello Convention separating the Oregon and Washington territories. Drawn from a scrapbook of newspaper-published letters, Allen's own unfinished manuscript, and a collection of family letters, reproductions of Allen's own writing arranged in roughly chronological order are surrounded by secondary commentaries and notes of historical context.
