It is impossible to consider what the South and what Southernness mean as cultural references without looking at how black women have contributed to and contested any unified definition of this region, claims Johnson. She describes the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a period of intense regional conflict that witnessed the reassertion of white hegemony, and so creating the fusion of Southern ideology and identity with whiteness that informed literary and political narratives for the next three generations. She looks at Frances Harper as Southern, Black women radicals in Charles Chusnutt and George Washington Cable, Anna Julia Cooper's A Voice from the South, and cultural narratives of place and displacement.
