Focusing on television news and TV in general, Johnston examines how media gatekeeping works, who the gatekeepers are, and why they filter what is presented to the public. Through interviews with major media figures, professionals, and civic leaders, the author explains how modern mind manipulation thrives and how teaching media literacy can combat it. Johnston's worries over "corporacy" (rule by corporations), are unrestrained: "If we do not wake up and take corrective action, a new era of corporate fascism may sweep the globe this time using psychological, economic, and physical weapons much more destructive than the military weapons used a half-century ago." This tone dominates Johnston's book, but is perhaps an attempt to use the master's tools against the master to use the often manufactured fear of news and advertisement in order to scare people toward buying the product she is selling: media literacy. Johnston, the jacket says rather vaguely, is a "retired university professor, a former head of local and state government agencies, and a former candidate for US Congress." Annotation c.
