The textbook has been developed from a one-semester, second-year course that Jones and Smith have long taught at Keele University, where students majoring in mathematics or statistics typically also major in a natural or social science or humanity. The material is therefore constructed to be interesting and useful to students with a broad range of interests, and specialized applications have been avoided in the examples. Students are assumed to have taken introductory courses in calculus, matrix algebra, and probability. They cover some background on probability, some gambling problems, random walks, Markov chains, Poisson processes, birth and death processes, queues, reliability and renewal, branching and other random processes, and computer simulations and projects. Answers and comments are provided for end-of-chapter problems. The first edition was published by Edward Arnold at an undisclosed date. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
