Farmed salmon is big business and in some small countries such as Ireland and Norway, it is central to the economy. This collection of scholarly essays addresses the biopolitical issues associated with farming, focusing largely on the parasitic sea louse. Harmful to its host, the salmon louse has proved difficult, if not impossible to eradicate in a farmed environment. In British Columbia, the lice affect the wild salmon as well, since the farms are not isolated. Social, economic and environmental issues are addressed as researchers investigate effective, alternative measures to abolishing farms, weighing advantages and disadvantages of their existence. From the Atlantic Canadian Provinces, Ireland, Scotland and Norway to British Columbia in the Pacific, concerns on how to manage the salmon louse are discussed.
