Juschka (gender studies and religious studies, U. of Regina, Canada) conducts a multidisciplinary analysis of gender/sex and gender/sex ideology, particularly as they relate to myth, ritual, and sign-symbol. She first describes her theory of the semiotics of gender/sex, which is informed by the work of Louis Althusser on ideology; Antonio Gramsci on hegemony and ideology; Judith Butler on the performance of gender/sex; and Ferdinand de Saussure, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Michel de Certeau, and Roland Barthes on semiotics, among others. After describing the theory as she has developed it, she applies it within explorations of the literary engagements of Angela Carter with mythology, the American mytheme of man as hunter and woman as gatherer, rituals of possession and exorcism in early modern France, the figure of the ancient Roman gladiator and its depiction in modern American film, and the iconography of the elephant-headed Indian deity Ganesha.
