Kadhim (Arabic language and literature, Dartmouth College) analyzes a number of 20th-century Arabic odes, qasidahs, which pursue an overtly anti-colonial agenda while remaining mindful of their literariness. There are two basic patterns of free-verse qasidah, he says: the first, common during colonialism, is frequently structured around key oppositions such as repression/freedom and death/rebirth, and often concludes with a promise of a more favorable future; the second, common in the post-colonial era, dwells on the present adverse state but generally offers no prospects for improvement. He considers five qasidahs by al-Sayyab and al-Bayati that exhibit the two patterns. The excerpts are transliterated and translated. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
