This four-volume set (in slip case) is the second part in a five-part series on the music of the Eastern Synagogue. The first part, published in 2003, presented the historical background to the music (along with a volume containing examples) and is intended as an introduction to the subsequent volumes. The present set is filled with the songs sung at the weekday daily services (v.1), minor holiday and public fast day services (v.2), and midnight, ninth of Ôv, and life-cycle event services (v.3). Each of the songs is presented with a musical score. All three volumes contain an index of the contents by prayer text, by rendition and source, and by composer. Volume Four contains the annotation and commentary for the songs, with introductory material describing the various festivals and occasions and notes on how the songs are performed and sung. Kalib, (emeritus, Eastern Michigan U.) has been a practicing cantor for over 50 years. Annotation ©2005 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
