This book introduces the fundamental concepts of classical braid and knot theory, and then goes on to discuss technical points. Braid theory and knot theory are related via Alexander's theorem and Markov's. Braid theory is generalized to dimension four, and the theory of surface braids is developed and applied to surface links. Surface links are also studied using the motion picture method, and techniques important to this method are outlined. These techniques are extended to represent homotopy classes. A table of knotted surfaces is included with the computation of Alexander polynomials. A complete proof of the generalized Markov theorem is provided. Kamada is a mathematician who, along with Viro, proved the generalized Alexander theorem. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
