An Iranian-born anthropologist balances the text-based and male-voiced accounts of Islam with the experiences of women as they express them. She demonstrates that the participation and activity of Iranian women in the religious arena is neither muted nor obscure, and that as a result of the Islamic development in Iran, the women's religious activity has become more visible, both in terms of control and involvement. She also shows that, though women may not play leading roles in the mosque, they play an important religious role in other complex forms of organization, such as the social network of the home and the exclusively female religious houses.
