Published in 2 volumes in 2004, this large volume contains the complete contents of the original. The entire work has been written by Kannengiesser (Concordia U., Montreal, Canada), with other specialists contributing sections to some chapters. In addition, David L. Balás and D. Jeffrey Bingham contribute a lengthy chapter assembling and commenting on the primary bibliographies for patristic exegesis, organized by books of the Bible. The volume is divided into two main parts: an overview of central issues, including historiography, Judaism and rhetorical culture as two primary contexts of exegesis, and patristic hermeneutics. The second part presents a historical survey where the patristic writings and writers are described in chronological chapters. Each chapter concludes with a list of primary sources, translations, and full bibiliography. An alphabetical list of names and works is provided, but there is no index.
